Weekly announcements 1/31/2011

Dear Sisters,
Here are the announcements for this week-

  • Please let Sister Nakashima know about any compassionate service you are providing (meals, cleaning, visits etc).  That way efforts aren't being unknowingly duplicated.
  • We will be having an "ethnic cooking night" on Feb 16.  More details to follow

Also, I am in the process of obtaining photos of our RS Christmas dinner.    I am planning to post them here unless there are objections.  If anyone has other RS photos they would like me to post, we can get a nice photo album on our blog.

Thanks, have a great week and Via con Dios,
Sister Maggie Hodacsek

January Friendship-er

The Frendship-er     January 2011

The theme for Relief Society for 2011 is 'Daughters in My Kingdom'. This was inspired by Sister Julie Beck's address from September's General Relief Society Broadcast. There is a banner in the Relief Society Room to remind of this each week.

Sister Beck's address contains a strong warning; " In the growing climate of entitlement, excuse, apathy and enticement, daughters of God who are not watchful, prayerful, and inspired are increasingly at risk of becoming what the scriptures describe as "silly women" who worship a variety of strange gods. Sadly, as a result of life's difficulties and the world's popular heresies, many sisters believe the myths more than the truth. Their misalignment with God's plan is demonstrated in findings that many are not doing essential things such as praying and reading scriptures. The Lord Himself has said that 'this is a day of warning, and not a day of many words.'"

We are all daughters of God, but are we all Daughters in His Kingdom? This has caused me to think and reflect on how I am living the gospel personally. I have a great desire to be a daughter in His Kingdom; however I have many weaknesses and lots of room to grow.

In the lesson 'Developing and Teaching Self Mastery' it says - "Our appetites and passions are like a spirited, powerful horse. If they are allowed to run wild, unharnessed and unbroken, they will take us where they please. They may take us to dangerous and harmful places. But we would not destroy a fine horse just because it is high-spirited. When bridled so that we become master, the horse can serve us well. Likewise, when we become master over our desires and feelings, we learn to redirect them within the bounds of the gospel. These feelings then become our servants. They can increase our ability to feel joy and love."

Each day is a new and great opportunity to be better, but a new year allows us to think about our progress on a bigger scale. It is my prayer that this year will be a year of self mastery; that we will use our great spirits to increase our ability to feel joy and love through living the gospel of Jesus Christ more perfectly. I have a great testimony that Heavenly Father's greatest joy is seeing our progression, and watching us feel more joy and peace.

Much Love and Best Wishes for this coming year.

Sister Phebe May
