The Frendship-er        November 2010

Happy November Dear Sisters,

My lesson this month is based on a talk by Renata Forste from last May's BYU Women's conference. It is called Coming Together and Sustaining Each Other in Righteous Choices. I was struck by the importance of her message and felt that every latter day saint would benefit from hearing it. She talks about each person's inherent right to personal revelation. She warns us against making judgments on people or families that make decisions that we either don't understand or don't see as being aligned with the gospel. Below are some of my favorite quotes from her talk:

"As covenant women, we come from all walks of life, all ages, marital statuses, incomes, education levels, race and ethnic backgrounds – but together, we speak the same simple testimony, we comfort each other and sustain each other in our mutual faith. Our testimony of Jesus Christ crosses all boundaries – political, racial, economic, national. We are the same; as covenant daughters of God. That doesn't mean we are the same in all of our life decisions, or even in how we live the principles of the gospel."

"Relief Society should be our sanctuary. We should be able to come together in prayer and fasting, in testimony and faith, and in loving support of one another. No sister should leave Relief Society with feelings of guilt, isolation, or inadequacy. If we are perfectly joined together – what woman would not want to be part of such a society? We need all of us – young, old, tall, short, single and married – as Sister Parkin said: "Bring your talents, your gifts, your individuality so that we can be one." It is only then, united, that we can move the kingdom forward. Perfectly joined together we can be an unstoppable force for good."

Elder Faust, to the women of the church said: As I look into your faces I can feel your goodness. I commend each of you for your day-to-day
works of righteousness. Even though your works may be known to only a few, they are recorded
in the Lamb's book of life, which one day will be opened to witness of your dedicated service,
devotion, and deeds as "instruments in the hands of God to bring about this great work". Now I beseech you, [sisters], by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that [we] all speak the same
thing, and that there be no divisions among [us]; but that [we] be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

The theme for this year is Unity in Diversity. It seems that each time I am seeking revelation on which topic I should speak about, I am always directed to this one. Obviously we need to hear this message again and again in order for us to realize the dire importance of it.

May we be unified in our diversity and be constantly engaged in spreading love; the true love of Jesus Christ.

In Spirit and Truth, Sister Phebe May

October Friendship-er

The Friendship-er

October 2010

As we enter October and the Thanksgiving season, it feels appropriate to touch on the topic of gratitude. Even though we have trials in our lives, we all have so much to be grateful for. I am not thinking of all the material things we enjoy, but also of the more important spiritual gifts. Having the Gospel in our lives can bring us peace when all around us is chaos. Modern communications bring to us, at an ever growing speed, stories of violence and misery. We can find peace and spiritual renewal in our homes, church meetings and by attending the Holy Temple.

President Faust said, "One of the evils of our time is taking for granted so many of the things we enjoy." The Lord spoke of this in D&C 88:33 "For what doth it profit a man if a gift is bestowed upon him, and he receive not the gift."

May we all have thankful hearts which open our eyes to the many blessings that continually surround us. President J. Reuben Clark said, "Hold fast to the blessings which God has provided for you. Yours is not the task to gain them, they are here, yours is the part of cherishing them."

I pray that our trials may not blind us to the many blessings we have, that we be always grateful and express that gratitude.

Happy Thanksgiving

With love and gratitude for you all,

Sister Kathleen Creaser

October Visiting Teaching Message:
This month's special issue on temples does not contain a specific First Presidency Message or Visiting Teaching Message. As with conference issues of the magazine, home and visiting teachers should prayerfully select their message from the contents of this magazine. The article by President Thomas S. Monson could be a good choice for many families, although other articles may be appropriate as well.

Spiritual Thought- The phrase "Wickedness never was happiness" was repeated by three different speakers during the latest general conference . . . and I am told it was also used in the priesthood session at least once too.

September Friendship-er

Happy September!

This time of year for most families, is a time of change and adjustment. I see it sometimes also as a chance for a fresh start. The story below has Here is a story that I found recently that has made me aware of how important it is for me to be cheerful amidst our busy lives.

Fred ate his breakfast dutifully and then slipped down from the chair.
"Now can I go over to Jimmy's, mother?" he asked
"But Fred" I said, "You were over there yesterday and they day before. Why not have Jimmy come here today?"
"Oh, he wouldn't want to." Fred's lip quivered in spite of his six years of manhood. "Please, mother."
"Why do you like Jimmy's house better that ours, son?" I pursued. It came to me suddenly that Fred and all his companions were always wanting to go to Jimmy's house."
"Why," he explained hesitatingly, "It's cause –it's cause Jimmy's house is a singing house."
"A singing house?" I questioned. "Now what do you mean by that?"
"Well, Fred was finding it hard to explain, "Jimmy's mom hums when she sews, and Annie in the kitchen, she sings when she cuts out cookies, and Jimmy's daddy always whistles she he comes home." Fred stopped a moment and added, "Their curtains are rolled clear up and there's flowers in the windows. All the boys like Jimmy's house, mother."
" You may go, son," I said quickly. I wanted him out of the way so I could think.
I looked around my house. Everyone told me how lovely it was. There were oriental rugs. We were paying for them in installments...We were paying for the overstuffed furniture and the car that way, also. Perhaps that was shy Fred's daddy didn't whistle when he came into the house.....
I went over to Jimmy's house, even if it was 10 o' clock and Saturday morning. It came to me that Mrs. Burton would not mind being interrupted in the middle of the morning. She never seemed to be in a hurry. She met me at the door with a towel around her head.
"Oh come in, I have just finished cleaning the living room. No indeed, you are not interrupting. I'll just take off this headdress and be right in."
While I waited, I looked around. The rugs were almost threadbare; the curtains....tied back; the furniture, old and scarred....A table with a bright cover held a number of late magazines. In the window were hanging baskets of ivy..., while a bird warbled from his cage hanging in the sun. Homey, that was the effect.
The kitchen door was open and I saw Jerry, the baby sitting on the clean linoleum, watching Annie as she pinched together the edges of an apple pie. She was singing.....
"Mrs. Burton came in smiling. "Well, she asked, "what is it?" For I know you came for something; you are such a busy woman."
"Yes," I said abruptly, "I came to see what a singing house is like."
Mrs. Burton looked puzzled. "Why, what do you mean?"
"Fred says he loves to come here because you have a singing house. I begin to see what he means."
"What a wonderful compliment!" Mrs. Burton's face flushed. "But of course my house doesn't compare to yours. Everyone says you have the loveliest house in town."
"But it isn't a singing house," I objected......"Tell me how you came to have one?"
"Well," smiled Mrs. Burton, "if you really want to know. You see, John doesn't make much. I don't think he ever will. He isn't that type. We have to cut somewhere, and we decided to cut on non essentials... there are books, magazines, and music and of course good wholesome food is another essential.. The children's clothes are very simple...But when all of these things are paid for, there doesn't seem to be much left for rugs and furniture...We don't go into debt if we can avoid it...However, we are happy....,"She concluded.
"I see," I said thoughtfully. I looked over at Jerry and Fred in the corner. They had manufactured a train out of match boxes and were loading it with wheat. They were scattering it a good deal, but wheat is clean and wholesome.
I went home. My oriental rugs looked faded. I snapped my curtains to the top of the windows, but the light was subdued as it came through the silken draperies.....My house was not a singing house. I determined to make it sing.

May we all find more ways to make our houses 'sing' by centering our lives and homes on 'the essentials.' The first 'essential' being Jesus Christ.
Much Love,
Sister Phebe May

Week of August 15, 2010

Several sisters have mentioned that it would be nice to have a Facebook page or Blog for annoncements and such. We thought a blog is easier to access for some and can always be posted on Facebook, so here we are.
Please bear with us as we figure out what information gets posted here and the form it takes.  The Blog being created to aid the sisters in the Courtenay Ward better serve one another, and I am hopeful that at least a few will find this page of value.  I am thinking the weekly announcements and "The Friendshipper" could be posted here to start.  In time, maybe we could post pictures of ward activities, a calandar, or other items here. I have also set up a dedicated email address at CourtenayRS@hotmail.com for us to use.

If you have any suggestions or critisisms, just comment and let us know what you think.

Now for the announcements-
  • Don't forget the dinner at Air Force Beach.  Wednesday August 18th at 6:00.  Bring a friend, favourite dessert (recipes to be exchanged later), lawn chairs, plates, utensils, and a cup.  Taco salad and drinks will be provided.
  • The sister missionaries are looking for sisters to do splits with them on Tuesdays in the month of August.
  • The Stake Relief Society Women's Conference is set for Saturday, Sept 25th at 1pm in Nanaimo.  We will be carpooling from here.

Have a great week and try to stay cool.

Love, Maggie Hodacsek
